Resources

There are so many resources out there for you, but as a new parent, Grandparent or relative to a new special little person, it can be very daunting. So here are just a few resources to start you off on a journey of discovery to help your little one.

When Harry was born, we were told that we should teach him sign language. So honestly, I dabbled a bit but I thought they were wrong. I thought he would learn to speak and I wouldn't have to...bother.  As it turns out, I did learn to sign and so did Harry. The misconception is that signing replaces speech. It doesn't. It just helps someone communicate who otherwise can't.

The thing I find the hardest about sign language has happened since Harry has been to school...there are two things actually.

Firstly...other children think it's easy and will go up to Harry and sign something eg good morning....but then there is no conversation to follow that up and they're done...but they think signing is easy.

Secondly...it is very hard to teach someone the signs they want to know, for what they want to say, when you have no idea what they want to say...and they can't tell you.

But...yes...don't be put off, everyone should learn to sign...you don't know when it might come in handy....life would be a lot easier if everyone signed.
